Self-Portrait
1. Define which techniques you tried and mastered? Struggled?
I definitely struggled with the grid and the sketching because the way I drew my grid caused my boxes to be off & too long because of that it caused for extended facial features which made my self portrait look weird and off. I also struggled a quite bit with drawing my lips because I couldn't get the shape correct nor could I get the shadow/highlight right. I struggled with using the white charcoal and with blending the charcoal.
2. How did you draw inspiration from other artists techniques or aesthetics in your work? In what ways did you derive meaning or gain historical perspectives from their work? Why these artists?
I didn’t really derive any inspiration from other artists when I created this piece. Just like with my other pieces I just went in without really looking at actual artists.
3. Describe the evolution of your piece. Decisions made. Compositional elements.
When I first began with my sketch I decided to split the paper and the picture into fourths to make it easier on me. The fourths helped out a lot because I felt like my sketch was really coming together well and looking almost like the picture until I realized that the sizing of my boxes weren’t the same, from the picture to my grid the sizing was different and it made parts of my sketch look longer than supposed to. After that realization I quit using the grid and free-handed the rest of the sketch with the willow. After working on the outline of my sketch I began on drawing my hair, doing my hair felt really easy and fun, I was able to get my hair to look similar and had fun erasing the black to create highlights. Next, I began to focus on my facial features, I worked on my eyes first, with my eyes the main thing I struggled with was with the eyelashes. I had to re draw my eyelashes at least 5 times after I started sketching my nose and felt that I got an accurate shape of it and moved on to my lips, which for me felt like the hardest part of my self portrait. It was hard to get an accurate shape of my lips because of the lighting of the picture that I used, I also didn't really know how to draw lips with just shadows of them. I eventually got done with the lips and got them to a decent shape. From there all I had to do was add words and I chose to write the saying "it be like that sometimes", I chose this because sometimes things don't go the way we want or expect but that just life.
4. If you could consider doing something over, explain why you would do this and what you would do next time?
If I could do something over I would most definitely make my grid smaller and use a smaller paper so my head doesn't look as long as it does, I would also practice more with the white because I was struggling with the blending of it and was struggling to get the highlight affect.
5. Elaborate on how this piece links with your other pieces? What is the common thread?
This piece doesn't really link with my common thread or with my other links.
