1. Define which techniques you tried and mastered? Struggled?
I tried the technique of photoshop and editing along with taking pictures for a photo series. There were things I definitely struggled with and one of them was working with the actual camera itself, I had not really had experiences with an actual camera so I was somewhat confused at the beginning, I eventually got the hang out it but I still struggled especially when we were outside because every time I tried taking a picture the pictures were way to light which then brings me to my next struggle, that being the lighting for the pictures. I had to mess around with lighting a quite bit just to make sure I had the perfect lighting. Lastly I struggled with doing everyone’s makeup with the time I had, I felt somewhat rushed because it took a while just doing one of the girl’s makeup and I felt like I had to speed up how I was doing so some of the makeup looks that I did didn’t come out the way I hoped they did but I’m not really mad at how they came out.
2. How did you draw inspiration from other artists techniques or aesthetics in your work? In what ways did you derive meaning or gain historical perspectives from their work? Why these artists?
I drew inspiration from this viral challenge going around called the “Hobby Lobby Challenge” and that challenge calls you to go to hobby lobby’s flower and plant section, and create a beautiful background with just the flowers and then take pictures. I also used Martin Schoeller as inspiration when I took the close ups.
3. Describe the evolution of your piece. Decisions made. Compositional elements.
With this photo shoot I first began by gathering up my friends and assigned them one color from the color wheel, I told them to wear something of that color for the photo shoot. The next day, I took time which was about 2-3 hours and did their makeup but the way I decided to their makeup was again based on the color wheel, I did their eye makeup based on the complementary color of the color that they were wearing. After we finished with the makeup we first headed to Hobby Lobby, in Hobby Lobby we directly went to the fake flowers and my idea with the fake flowers was again to arrange the flowers based on the color they were wearing. For example, with my friend Yessica she was wearing the color blue so we arranged a variety of red and orange flowers around her to make her color pop out more. Once finished with the session at Hobby Lobby we went to this flower shop called Bella Calla and outside that shop they had this beautiful mural that had a Latino vibe to it, with the mural I tried positioning them with their complementary color but it was a little difficult since the wall didn't necessarily have all the colors I needed, I instead matched two of my friends with the wall and decided to just take a picture of the entire mural as it is.
4. If you could consider doing something over, explain why you would do this and what you would do next time?
If I could consider doing something different I would have spent more time with the cameras before I went out to do the photo shoot, I would also do it on a day where the models and I have more time because although I got the photos done in half a day I wish I would have spent more time on the pictures.
5. Elaborate on how this piece links with your other pieces? What is the common thread?
This piece links with my other pieces because of the common thread, that being my identity and more specifically my culture. All the girls in my photo series are Latinas and are proud to be one which is something I am.
