1. Define which techniques you tried and mastered? Struggled?
The technique I tried was Photoshop, there was plenty of things I struggled with while creating these pieces. A major thing I struggled with was the cropping of the picture, it was extremely difficult to crop my sister's picture without cutting out body parts or without making her head a weird shape. Additionally, the creation of the stamp was something that I struggled with as well due to the texture of the stamp; trying to capture a washed effect for the entire stamp
2. How did you draw inspiration from other artists techniques or aesthetics in your work? In what ways did you derive meaning or gain historical perspectives from their work? Why these artists?
I drew inspiration from political cartoons, I wanted to use the meaning they were trying to convey and put my on twist on it by making it more personal to me.
3. Describe the evolution of your piece. Decisions made. Compositional elements.
My piece first started as a simple picture I took of my sister when she was younger, I then decided to crop the picture to have less empty space. From there I took cropping further and cropped my sister and created a layer mask so it could only be my sister that was showing, I then researched case files to look for the specific font that they used so I could give the picture a more realistic feel to it, once I found the perfect font I looked up the perfect republican red and changed the font to that color. I titled the font to give it the appearance of a stamp and made the font around a size 60. I then had to look up how to get the texture of the stamp and followed the guide step by step and got the texture of the stamp, once I got the stamp set in the perfect position I used the font from the case files and chose typical sayings that I found in political cartoons and had them in two colors to give it a wanted effect. Additionally, I added simple facts about my sister to make her seem innocent even though the purpose of the picture is for her to be seen as a "criminal" I also looked up questions that are asked during immigration trials and decided to adds those to further emphasize the realistic feel I want to give it. I then printed the picture with four different sayings and place them all in a horizontal direction to make it seem as if it was a storybook and the audience was reading a book.
4. If you could consider doing something over, explain why you would do this and what you would do next time?
If I could do the piece over I would definitely make sure the picture was clearer and of better quality because it was really time consuming to try and just crop my sister without cropping her fingers or giving her head a weird shape. I would also look at more videos that talk about getting a texture for either words or boxes because it was also hard to capture the texture for the entire box, I had to settle with not having the whole box with the texture because it wasn't picking up texture in certain areas.
5. Elaborate on how this piece links with your other pieces? What is the common thread?
This links with my other pieces because of my common thread, my common thread is identity, more specially culture. My pieces relate to each other because they all speak on different aspects of my culture. The key thread that I seen within my pieces is the idea of social issues, the social issue most of my pieces tend to talk about is immigration.
