Textured Shadows
1. Define which techniques you tried and mastered? Struggled?
The techniques I tried with this project is using and blending prismacolor pencils and makeup. A few things that i struggled with were blending the prismacolor gradation for the background, in addition i struggled with using makeup as the actual medium for the palettes, I applied a base coat of primer first so the eyeshadows could stay intact but even with the primer the eyeshadows were patchy and didn't stick to all of the paper so there were spots were there wasn't eyeshadow. The texture of the eyeshadow also didn’t stick, it did on some but not with all. I also struggled with the reflection because the sizing of the eyeshadow pans were a lot smaller in the reflection and so trying to fit all them all in were difficult.
2. How did you draw inspiration from other artists techniques or aesthetics in your work? In what ways did you derive meaning or gain historical perspectives from their work? Why these artists?
In this piece I didn't really draw inspiration from anyone, I got help from my peers on placement, colors and composition.
3. Describe the evolution of your piece. Decisions made. Compositional elements.
When I started the project I didn’t know how I wanted to place the palettes simply because one of the two palettes had a mirror and the other didn’t and so I wanted to have a type of reflection in my piece. Once I got the placement down I took a picture of the palettes, printed it out and split it into thirds but I soon realized that the thirds weren’t helping me when I tried sketching it out so I went back in and split it into fourths. After splitting it to fourths sketching it out became much easier but one mistake I made while sketching it out was that I had my paper down horizontal while I was looking at the picture in a vertical manner, and because of that the sketch wasn’t matching up to the picture and once I realized my mistake I had to erase everything and start over which slowed me down quite a bit but not too bad. After I got the sketching down I began filling it in with the makeup and with that I used an eyeshadow primer before placing down the eyeshadows and for the most part it was really helpful because it intensified the color on the paper BUT not every white space got covered with the eyeshaadow, I also used glitter glue which is a type of primer too for the textures eyeshadows and that really helped to bring out the creaminess of the eyeshadows and make it look smoother. I next moved on to the outer part of the palettes and I started using prismacolors for it, I made sure that for the edges I went darker to give it a better definition.
4. If you could consider doing something over, explain why you would do this and what you would do next time?
If I could consider doing something over, I would choose to use a different medium for the background I’d like to try using pastels instead of prismas and see what type of effect that would have on the piece. I would also try to see how to make the makeup stick better to the paper and see if different primers would help the eyeshadows glide on better.
5. Elaborate on how this piece links with your other pieces? What is the common thread?
This piece links to my other pieces because all my pieces revolve around my identity, my first 3 projects revolved around my culture, while my next 3 will revolve around things that make up my identity and make me who i am. With my pieces I'm trying to have either similar colors or have the same type of idea.
