In honor of..
1. Define which techniques you tried and mastered? Struggled?
The thing i struggled with the most was with the medium, for a first charcoal user working with charcoal was so frustrating and hard due to the fact that using charcoal can get extremely messy. Another thing I struggled with was the element of shapes and proportions, I struggled creating the face; the lips and nose were not easy to draw because I couldn't get the shape nor proportions right at first, the chin was also a bit challenging to draw in second picture.
2. How did you draw inspiration from other artists techniques or aesthetics in your work? In what ways did you derive meaning or gain historical perspectives from their work? Why these artists?
I didn't necessarily draw inspiration from other artists, I got some of my ideas from my classmates. They bounced off recommendations on how I should go about the drawing and the medium I should use and from there I had made my choice on what I wanted to do and how I wanted it to appear to the audience.
3. Describe the evolution of your piece. Decisions made. Compositional elements.
From the start of the project my objective was to focus on Selena's figure, I spent a quite amount of time figuring out what picture I wanted to use and when I did I stook through it, when I began to sketch it in my sketchbook it seemed fine, I was able to really capture her figure but I found struggling with the shape of her head it wasn't something I was too bothered about. Once I began to sketch it out on a bigger scale I began having issues and the method I was using to draw her body no longer worked, i began getting frustrated and losing interest in the piece so I, at the last minute changed my picture of inspiration and got a close up picture of Selena. Although I had to start over because of last minute changes I began working and it was coming along pretty well, the elements that I originally planned on using in my picture were for the majority still present in my second piece. To finish up my project I used charcoal and pastels to color in the drawing, I decided to make the color red of the lips and the background the center of attention the thing that pops out the most, then I made everything else black and grey.
4. If you could consider doing something over, explain why you would do this and what you would do next time? Something I would consider doing over is having the picture I want to base my piece on set in stone because with this piece I found myself losing interest in the original picture I had intended to do my piece on and changed my
mind at the last minute and that was a huge mistake simply because I had little to no time to work on my project since I had to start over and because of that I felt as if I rushed my drawing and didn't present my best piece, so not changing my mind at the last minute is definitely something I would not do again.
5. Elaborate on how this piece links with your other pieces? What is the common thread?
This piece links with my other pieces because the common thread of my art projects will revolve around my Mexican culture and, the way this piece links to my other pieces is in the way that Selena Quintanilla is a huge role model for latinas all around the world, Her life story and career is something all Latinas like me look up too.
