1. Define which techniques you tried and mastered? Struggled?
I struggled with getting the paw print to actually look like a paw print each time I tried it just turned out to look like a blob of paint which was frustrating, and along with the blue never set which was hard to work with because it wasn’t allowing the others to stick.
2. How did you draw inspiration from other artists techniques or aesthetics in your work? In what ways did you derive meaning or gain historical perspectives from their work? Why these artists?
I didn’t really draw inspiration from other artists.
3. Describe the evolution of your piece. Decisions made. Compositional elements.
I started out by using water colors, I mixed blue, white, green and a peach to get this beautiful teal color. I painted the canvas with the teal until it was all covered, after that I let it out to dry. I left to dry for a couple days because the day after I had painted it I tested to see if the paint had dried but it didn’t so I let it continue to dry. After a couple of days, I wanted to a border of my dog’s paw print. For the paw prints I changed my medium to acrylic in hopes that it would work but I initially had troubles with creating black paint, I also had trouble with getting a paw print but I kept attempting in hopes that I would get it right. I ended the piece by drawing an S in the middle because my dog’s name starts with an S.
4. If you could consider doing something over, explain why you would do this and what you would do next time?
I would love to do the whole piece because it didn’t turn out at all how I wanted to, it turned out a lot sloppier and messier than I was hoping. I wanted the paw prints to be more clear and actually look like a paw but my dog has small paws which I think contributed to the fail of the print. Additionally, I had used watercolor for the background which also seemed to be a fail because the watercolor never seemed to set, it was still tacky after being out in the air to dry so I would definitely change the background to acrylic or oil.
5. Elaborate on how this piece links with your other pieces? What is the common thread?
This piece links to my other pieces because I previously had done a photography piece on my dog, and because I love dogs and they are a part of who I am which relates to my theme of identity.
