Forged by the Sea
1. Define which techniques you tried and mastered? Struggled?
I used Acrylic for my medium for this project, the one thing I somewhat struggled with was layering the colors. The colors went on good but then would get patchy so I found myself having to layer the colors to get a good solid color. I also struggled with the tiny details and painting smaller areas because of the brushes I was using and because the smaller details were overall harder to get to look right but I eventually got it down. Another thing again would have to be shadows and contrasts, I don't necessarily know to make the shadows look more realistic so I was struggling with placement and with the intensity.
2. How did you draw inspiration from other artists techniques or aesthetics in your work? In what ways did you derive meaning or gain historical perspectives from their work? Why these artists?
I didn't really derive any inspiration from artist on this piece. I just used the navy logo as my inspiration
3. Describe the evolution of your piece. Decisions made. Compositional elements.
I began by sketching the Navy logo out onto my canvas, it took me several tries until I was finally satisfied with the placement and size of the eagle, after that I had to mix several colors in order to get the deep navy blue that I chose to be the background, after that I alternated from painting the background and mixing the colors to get the gold like color for the eagle. Painting the background was a slight struggle because I kept having to mix more paint so the background wouldn't look uneven but after i was able to finish that I moved on to the eagle and started painting in the parts that were lighter and then went in with a darker color to kind of represent the shadows of the logo but it was slightly hard to it to look more realistic.
4. If you could consider doing something over, explain why you would do this and what you would do next time?
If I could do something over again I would definitely get a bigger canvas because when I was sketching out the eagle I found myself constantly struggling to make the wings even due to the lack of space, I had to constantly erase and redraw so I could make sure everything is proportioned correctly. I would also make sure to have better acrylic paint and better brushes for the detailing. Lastly, I wanted to add forged by the sea but wasn't able to but if I were to do this project again I would add those words to it.
5. Elaborate on how this piece links with your other pieces? What is the common thread?
This piece links to my other pieces because enlisting into the military is something that I've always thought about and now that I've enlisted I am able to have a secured future for the next 4 years, but this relates to my common thread because this is something that I'm into and it's something that I want others to know about me and since my theme is identity I am able to let others know something that makes up my identity.
